San Clemente Cathedral

San Clemente Cathedral

If you are planning to wander around the historic centre of Valdagno you can’t do without visiting San Clemente Cathedral. San Clemente was Pope between 92 and 97 B.C. besides being one of the fathers of the Catholic Church and is also known as Clemente Romano. In the sacristy a fine work of art is kept. It is a painting on stone realized by Maestro Girolamo in 1445. The painting portrays the Virgin with the Holy Child,on the predella and around them Jesus Christ with twelve apostles, above them the most worshipped Saints and eight Fathers of the Church. Higher up the Annunciation and Heaven. We should think that one of the biggest worries in those years was the precariousness of the lands devoted to agriculture, always threatened by the floods of river Agno. That is why so many protector Saints are portrayed.
On the left of the Virgin there are as a matter of fact also San Nicola and San Lorenzo(to whom the hospital of Valdagno is devoted). On the left of the Virgin there are as a matter of fact also San Nicola and San Lorenzo(to whom the hospital of Valdagno is devoted).

The Cathedral of San Clemente is worth a visit not only for the Ancona but for the wealth of architectural elements inside: imposing walls and a very high ceiling that rises at every window to let in as much light as possible. The Cathedral of San Clemente was planned by the architect from Bassano Giovanni Miazzi(1698-1797).
It contains plenty of outstanding works of art. Particularly remarkable is the altar piece by the vicentine painter Giacomo Ciesa (1733-1822) 4 metres high and portraying San Clemente’s martyrdom.
